Residual Current Protection

Mode 3 AC charging: Under IEC 62955, a residual direct current detecting device (RDC-DD) should be provided. In practice, two solutions are available: use a Type B RCD directly; or use a Type A/Type F RCD together with an RDC-DD that automatically disconnects the supply when DC fault current exceeds 6 mA.
Mode 4 DC fast charging: A protective device capable of responding to DC fault currents should be provided. System-level design should follow IEC 61851-23 (safety requirements for DC charging equipment) and IEC 61851-24 (digital communication and protection coordination). Type B RCDs are widely used because they can detect smooth DC residual currents, but the specific selection must be comprehensively verified by a qualified engineer against the local grid earthing arrangement and the charging equipment's internal protection design.
